In 1977, Lotus introduced the Type 78, a revolutionary ground-effect car with a slim monocoque chassis. The key design feature was the wide sidepods, which were shaped like inverted aeroplane wings on the inside. The further developed Type 79 was introduced during the 1978 season. The fuel tanks were positioned behind the cockpit and the rear suspension had effective internal dampers.

The drivers in 1978 were Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson. Success was not long in coming: Andretti scored 5 victories to win the drivers’ championship. Peterson added another victory to secure the constructors’ title for the team. The Type 79 strongly influenced later F1 machines and its overwhelming speed as well as its graceful design and black livery earned it the nickname “Black Beauty”.

The 1:20 scale kit faithfully reproduces the monocoque chassis, suspension and engine of the Lotus Type 79. The front and rear vehicle panelling can be removed after assembly to reveal the engine and cockpit area.
