These vehicles, on which a casemate gun was mounted, were used extensively by the German Wehrmacht throughout the Second World War, serving as cover fire for the infantry and also as tank destroyers.

Several hundred of these special self-propelled guns – built on a Pz. Kpfw. III tank chassis – were built in several versions, constantly upgrading armour and guns to keep pace with the development of enemy weapons.
