An ambitious mechanisation project for the German armed forces was launched in the mid-1930s. In fact, it was considered strategic to equip the Wehrmacht with a standard military chassis that would optimise the troops’ off-road mobility. Among the various versions on offer, the average four-wheel drive vehicle produced by Opel and Auto Union was particularly popular.
The medium chassis was realised in various configurations to make it suitable for transporting troops, towing trailers, reconnaissance and also to meet the requirements of the radio departments. The Kfz. 12, built by Horch (Horch was part of the Auto Union Group together with Wanderer, Audi and DKW), proved to be very reliable and robust in any operating environment thanks to its simple but effective design.
