The Leopard 1 tank, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the armoured divisions of the Federal Republic of Germany and several NATO forces during the “cold war” period.
The role of the Leopard was decisive, as it was tasked with countering the huge numbers of tanks that could be deployed by Warsaw Pact troops. It was equipped with tried and tested 105mm L7 cannons that could use different types of ammunition.
The A5 version represents a significant improvement, as it is equipped with a modified turret that can accommodate the new computerised target recognition and fire control systems. Additional composite polycarbonate armour has also been fitted, which significantly increases protection and resistance to impact.
