The “Battle of Berlin” heralded the end of the Second World War on the European theatre of war. This major offensive by the Soviet Red Army moved directly into the capital of the Third Reich after passing the German defence lines on the Oder. The city itself was defended by soldiers of the army and the Volkssturm and was the scene of the last and fiercest clashes of the war. The Soviet forces, led by Marshal Zhukov and Marshal Konev, forced the surrender of the city with an overwhelming superiority of soldiers, vehicles and artillery on 2 May 1945. The Reichstag, seat of the Reich Parliament, had enormous symbolic significance and was the scene of the last acts of conflict in Europe. The Red Army soldier raising the Soviet flag on the ruins of the Reichstag at the end of the Battle of Berlin is one of the most iconic images of the Second World War.
