The RF-4E Phantom II reconnaissance fighter is the reconnaissance version of the famous two-seat multi-role fighter from the legendary McDonnell Douglas Phantom II family. It was specially designed for export and represented a combination of the reconnaissance systems of the RF-4C and the aerodynamic structure and reinforced engines of the F-4E. The Air Force received the first examples in the early 1970s, where they were used most frequently alongside Japan, Iran, Israel and Greece. Many components and reconnaissance systems were also manufactured in Germany. The RF-4E was able to carry out “all-weather” reconnaissance missions and, thanks to its infrared sensors, homing systems and photo cameras, was able to map the terrain effectively and accurately. Some countries also developed mission-specific versions.
