Launched in 1993, the JSF (Joint Strike Fighter) programme aimed to develop a new fifth-generation all-weather fighter for the United States Air Force and NATO countries. The result of the project was the single-seater Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. The F-35 is equipped with cutting-edge technology and is characterised by an aerodynamic design with stealth technology and trapezoidal wings. It was developed for air superiority tasks, to support other aircraft as well as for ground attacks, whereby the initial model can be configured differently.
Thanks to its STOVL characteristics, the F-35B is designed for vertical take-off and landing and is therefore suitable for use on aircraft carriers such as the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth or the Italian Navy’s Cavour. The F-35B, which is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney engine with afterburner and a downward-facing air exhaust nozzle, is also used by the US Marine Corps. Thanks to its extraordinary operational flexibility, high payload capacity for attack material and reliable on-board technology, the F-35 Lightning II can already be regarded as a milestone in air force technology in the 21st century.
