Registered with the Wehrmacht under the designation LKW 3,6-36 S 3t Blitz, this vehicle represented the typical example of that association applied in 1938 to the construction of civilian vehicles which were converted into military vehicles. The same truck – OPEL without BLITZ – was actually built for commercial use with more or less similar characteristics. It was rightly called “the draft horse” of the German army, the vehicle for all purposes, tireless witness to the happiness and bitterness that accompanied the Wehrmacht in the battles fought from the North Sea to the African sand sea. Many thousands of them were built and distributed to all the special divisions of the army, the air force, the navy and the SS. The photographs of World War II show the Opel Blitz in all theatres of war, with all kinds of battle unit and auxiliary service markings.
The colouring of these vehicles was dark green (sandy yellow in Africa). From June 1943 onwards, all vehicles, both civilian and military, were delivered in sand-yellow colour.
The Opel Blitz was built in numerous versions – ambulance, tanker, command car, works car – and modellers have a varied choice to meet their own wishes.
