A nativity scene is a traditional decoration associated with Christmas celebrations that depicts the scene of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nativity scenes come in various forms, from simple, home-made models to complex and ornate installations. Their aim is to remind the faithful of the biblical story of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The tradition of making nativity scenes dates back to the Middle Ages. In 1223, St Francis of Assisi created a living nativity scene in Greccio, Italy, which recreated the scene of the birth of Jesus with the participation of people and animals. In this way, he wanted to bring people closer to the mystery of the Incarnation. Shortly after this event, nativity scenes appeared all over Europe, initially in monasteries and later also in churches and private homes.

The traditional nativity scene contains figures representing the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Angels, shepherds, the Magi (wise men from the East) and animals such as oxen, donkeys and sheep are often added. In the centre is a small manger in which the newborn Jesus lies. The entire scene is housed in a stable or cave.

The COBI nativity scene contains the most characteristic elements of a traditional stable. The interesting structure of 370 elements contains many interesting plants, including ivy on the wall and a palm tree near the stable. Above the small building is the Star of Bethlehem, which shows the way to the Wise Men from the East. In their hands they hold gifts that they will give to the newborn Christ. Running around are cattle, an ox, a sheep and a donkey. In the stable itself is the Holy Family: Joseph, Mary and Jesus.
