The vast forests of the north and the tundra beyond the Wall are home to the Free People, countless so-called barbarians who do not follow any king and put their freedom above everything. Hardly a lord from the south can imagine the enormous flood of roaring barbarians ready to roll towards them when they gather under one banner and march together. Scattered robbers may be no more than a bunch of armed peasants who are easy to beat back, but in their mass they become an all-consuming wave that can easily overwhelm much heavier-armed units.
