Skat is the Germans’ favourite card game for three or four players and originated around 1820 in the “Skat city” of Altenburg. The classic French version is particularly widespread in West Germany.
Skat is played today according to the rules of the German Skat Association; 32 hands, German or French colours, 3 players, one of whom always plays alone against 2 others. Skat is a trick-taking game; suit ranking: clubs = 12, spades = 11, hearts = 10, diamonds = 9.
